The costume and makeup stage is vital in the production for our trailer. The costumes and makeup looks picked need to reflect our sub-genre: supernatural as well as making sure that the cast look as realistic as possible. Gaining ideas for our costume and makeup came from real media inspirations in which we have researched, such as by using YouTube and real media texts.

the conjuring 2 (2016)The Conjuring 2 (2016), which was directed by James Wan, shows a nun that has white skin, yellow eyes and the veins around her face can be seen. Since white makeup is used it makes the audience focus on the yellow eyes since they look as if they're looking directly at them. The black makeup around the eyes and mouth makes the nun seem supernatural since it looks lifeless.

|
sinister 2 (2015)Sinster 2 (2016), which was directed by Ciaran Foy, shows a skeleton like figure which has no eyes or mouth. The black paint around the eyes gives the effect that the antagonist has no eyes or their eyes are abnormally larger than usual. Additionally, the blue/black makeup surrounding the mouth makes it seem as if the antagonist has no mouth since the skin has surrounded it. This is effective in creating an eerie effect since the antagonist looks inhuman.

|
cassadaga (2013)Cassadaga (2013), which was directed by Anthony DiBlasi, shows a distorted person since they have dark skin and rotten teeth. This look is effective since it seems as if it can happen to anyone since the audience can clearly identify that the person is human, but has been changed. The messy style and theme of features being exaggerated (such as veins and the eyes) shows that the person is the antagonist.

|
dEAD silence (2007)Dead Silence (2007), which is directed by James Wan, features a distorted human face by giving the effect that their skin has cracked and by using dark eyeshadow around their eyes. Since the skin is cracked it gives the effect that the antagonist is indestructible and that they are immortal. By using dark colours such as black and brown eyeshadow it contrasts with the pale colour of the woman's face. The dark lighting used makes the eyes stand out since the rest of the face is unnoticeable.
|
bruising:
Since our sub-genre is supernatural, bruising is an effective way to show the presence of the antagonist. These bruises will range in colour to make them stand out but to also show the power of the antagonist. This is an important part in our trailer since the protagonists will have bruises all over their body.

|
|
SCARS:
The degree as to how gruesome our scars will look will depend on how vicious we want our antagonist to be. Scars are a common feature of paranormal films since it's a sign that the antagonist takes the form of a person in order to attack their victims.

|
face of the antagonist:
The antagonist is the main feature of our trailer meaning the makeup used needs to clearly indicate that they are the antagonist. Through the use of dark colours the antagonist will have human features that are exaggerated such as very pale skin and yellow/red eyes.

EXPERIMENT 1
|
I used a range of eye shadows to make a bruise. These colours consisted of dark blue/green, purple and brown to give the effect of a real bruise. This look may be used to show the damage and power done by the antagonist to the protagonist.
This look was very quick and simple to complete meaning that on the day of filming, it would be easy to recreate this look without going into filming time. Additionally, it was very cheap since this eye shadow palette was purchased beforehand. However, it is very easily smudged and the colours are limited since bruises are very dark. |
EXPERIMENT 2
To make a fake scar I used liquid latex and tissue paper to recreate the effect of skin. I then used a spatula to make the cut between the different layers. I then sprayed fake blood around the cut to make it look like it was real blood from the cut.
This fake scar looked very realistic and gave the effect of a deep cut. Since I had a hairdryer it meant that the different layers could dry quicker, than if I had let the latex naturally dry. However, since this is only one scar it was very time-consuming meaning that it may take up filming time. Since I had to use a spatula to make the cut, I have to make sure that I am careful that I do not cut the person's arm when using the spatula. |

experiment 3
To make the face of the antagonist I used white and black face paint: white for the base and black to enhance the features such as the eyes and lips. To complete the look I also made my hair messy to represent the chaos in the scenes featuring the antagonist.
The face of the antagonist was quick to complete since it's very simple but effective due to the contrast of colours. Even though this look is messy, it outlines the features around the face. This look is easily smudged and is hard to apply since a lot of face paint needs to be used in order to create a thick white base to make the antagonist look very inhuman. This may mean we may have to buy more resources such as face paint before the shooting day. |
The main props that will be used in our horror trailer will be a crucifix and the holy handgun. These all relate to our synopsis since the crucifix will be used to repel the paranormal entity away as well as the holy handgun to try and kill the antagonist. We will also use props including a camera and cardboard boxes to represent the protagonists moving into the house and documenting their activity. Props such as the crucifix and handgun represent the battle against evil in which good is trying to win.
This moodboard represents the types of props that we will be using in our horror trailer. The background represents the type of camera style that we may use since we are filming some events from the protagonist's perspective.
PROP INSPIRATION:
crucifix - The conjuring 2 (2016)Crucifixes are used as a symbol to represent the power of good over evil. In many supernatural films a crucifix is used in order to save the victim over the paranormal entity/demon that's possessing them.
tripod - paranormal activity 2 (2010)Tripods are used in horror films to show the audience the perspective of the protagonist's/victims. By using a tripod it means that the shot can be clearly seen without any unwanted camera movements.
|
camera - the blair witch project (1999)Cameras are used within a film since the protagonist's record the events happening to them and the supernatural events that happen. It gives a sense of realism to the film since the events happening could also happen to the audience.
gun - dementia (2015)Even though guns aren't commonly used in horror films we decided to use one to make our trailer unique. A gun represents the power and control that the protagonist has over the antagonist, which represents role reversal since the antagonist usually holds the power in horror films.
|
unfriended (2014)Unfriended shows the view of the protagonists through a webcam. Since the film has the theme of realism and survival the characters are dressed in casual clothing which features t-shirts and jeans. We will use this idea in our trailer since our trailer follows the idea of two women being haunted by a paranormal entity. If the clothing is casual then it means that the audience would be able to relate and the trailer would seem more realistic.
|
|
paranormal activity (2007)The protagonists in Paranormal Activity are seen wearing pyjamas since they encounter paranormal events during the night. Since the protagonists in our trailer are quite young, this gives us inspiration to make the costume for them casual and to follow what they would usually wear.
|
the conjuring (2013)The Conjuring gave us inspiration for one of our male protagonists, since his outfit represents that he is older. Since The Conjuring is based during the 1970's, the costume represents this time era since this is what they would wear. When filming for our own trailer, we must make sure that we get costumes from the time era that we are following.

I found working with costume and makeup for our trailer very interesting since it was an interactive project in which I could experiment with different looks. I also got to work with a range of different materials such as liquid latex to create a scar effect and different face paints. The level of difficulty and time taken with each look varied. With looks such as creating a bruise, it was very quick and simple, but compared to creating a scar it was very time consuming as well as being very difficult. Overall, the looks that I created looked realistic, in which was the main aim for these makeup looks.
The costumes that we used were casual clothes in which the cast brought in themselves since this is what they would usually wear to college. This is because it fits in with the stereotypical image of a teenager since they are represented as relaxed and careless, especially in horror films (in which is why they are usually the victims). The props used were provided by the cast since they were everyday items such as a rosary and a cardboard box. However, these props may vary depending on the items provided at the location that we can use to make our trailer look more realistic.
