The sound of a trailer is a vital piece of the trailer's production. the sound delivers the atmosphere and feel of the trailer to the audience and is an important tool which contributes to the overall success or failure of a trailer. our soundtrack will feature sound effects which create a dangerous, and hopeless yet gripping atmosphere. this page will provide you with an insight of our inspirations and visions for our soundtrack, how the sound track was produced and even a description of how we dealt with issues during this products creation. we will also be permitted the use of a number of different software such as garage band and premiere. this will allow us to experiment with less restrictions allowing us to make higher quality products.

The trailer opens with a montage showing the great perks & advantages of sharing information & saving memories on the internet, the shots used vary from long shots, close ups excetra. the background music is a piano which is in a happy tone. Then from there the trailer progresses just using key board noises, then to a new scene with Diegetic sound however transitions betweens diegetic & non diegetic sound, the non diegetic sound sounds like some for of idol technological buzz.

Deliver us from evil

This trailer can also be used as a form of sound inspiration within our trailer as it utilises silence very well, when silence is used it builds up tension which is an aspect that should be accompliashed by the sound within the trailer. They aslso used a wide variety of non-diegetic sounds t emphasies buildeups towards jumpscares aswell as diegetic sound for the actual jumpscares that are in the trailer. The use of a non diegetic narrative voice creates a sense of emergency immersing the audience within the trailer's narrative enticing the audience to watch on and develop an interest in the actual film.

THE VISIT
|
Like many horror The Visit's sound starts off peaceful and the sound in no way connotes horror or fear. Then after the grandparents say"goodnight" their is a silence which breaks the equilibrium but silence i used quickly but throughout the trailer. Their are loud scratches of the grandmother which is foley sfx but is loud so it can be remembered by the audience. You also hear drones and high pitched noises which is intimidating for the audience because they feel like something is coming which is the fear of the unknown. Near the end you hear heavy breathing and a short but terrifying scream which then goes to silence.

Anger of the dead
|
the scene begins with an establishing shot in which a distant ringing telephone can be heard in the distance. this use of background sound has been used to introduce the idea that something may be about to happen to disturb a currently established equilibrium. the dramatic dialogue presented over the course of this scene establishes a potential disequilibrium as the dialogue is the only sound present at this time, creating tension. a non diegetic Foley sound effect confirms this disequilibrium during the first caption, after which a drone is played in order to intensify this tension. a series of quick cuts and the sound of a beat escalates the drama until the zombie is discover and his growls of hunger confirm the danger.

CARRIE
|
The sound is Carrie is very good and unique. Through the whole trailer the sound is slowly but gradually gets faster towards the end of the trailer. This makes the trailer engaging to viewers because early on from the trailer you can tell something is going to break the peaceful sound in the trailer. What also makes the horror trailers sound engaging is the use of foley sound effects in the background to the score sound which was calm and relaxing. Also when the sound goes really quick around the end when the antagonist is presented which is good but maybe could of been improved by having the sound last a bit longer to maybe strike more fear into the audience.

tHE pURGE
|
The sound in the Horror trailer The Purge starts of very peaceful and calm. The first 20 seconds makes it seem like your not even watching a horror trailer. Next foley SFX is used in between silence and dialogue between the characters. It continues to use sirens in the trailer which engages the reader throughout the trailer. It also uses a long siren which again is engaging to the reader because not until about three quarters into the trailer do you get the feel of a classic horror movie. This is done by adding drones which is commonly used to strike fear into the audience. You also hear a sword being brought which is unusually loud but is used because they want to make the audience fearful. Then at end to an extent everything goes crazy with combination of screams, stabbing and screaming which is exciting for the audience. You also hear drones in the background before their is silence.

Poltergeist
|
In the beginning trailer uses music that is soft and peaceful. It gives the audience a clear idea that this is the equilibrium. It then use thuds to break the equilibrium. The sound in this trailer is very good mainly because it uses the same drone almost through out the whole trailer. There are high pitched noise which hopes to intimidate the audience. Silence is used incredibly well in the trailer as it creates anticipation for the audience. It also uses high pitch screams occasionally in the trailer. Near the end of the trailer it in between the dialogue between different characters their is silence.

We used multiple software within the production of our sound, The primary software that we used however was Premiere but some of the sounds we used where created in garage band. These below are the potential sounds that may potentially be used within our trailer and what they will be used for. I decided to add more sounds than necessary as it is more advantages than not having enough.

This noise is a glass smash, which could potentially be used in a scene of tension building or silence breaking smash, as it is such a sudden sound in terms of its smash. This sound can be used to potentially lure a character (such as the girls or the father) to a certain location.

This sound can be used to drop behind the character & heighten the level of fear for the character within the trailer, this can build tension & increase the thrill for the audience that is watching the film. Due to our locations we may not be able to have a wood oriented setting, however it can be used within the house, for example a wood based object.

This is a very sudden & loud sound, It is created in order to scare the audience very suddenly, this could potentially be used within a screen which would trigger a jump scare.

the sound "crash_06" has a sound that unlike the others I don't think it can be used to build tension, I feel like instead I can use it to create a good introduction to either the opening scene , scene or a different location.

This sound could be used during the scene where the computer is being hacked, it could be used as sounds as the computer begins to glitch and spaz out, and fall into an immaculate state of chaos.

This is definitely a tension building sound as it is someone breathing it can defiantly be paired with other sounds in order to create a scene that will strengthen the horror appeal to the scape of the scene.

This sound can be used to create a huge build in tension or leave the audience very curios as to what will happen in the actual film, this is if I was to place it in the end of the trailer, which is probably the best thing to do if I wanted to use this.

This glitch is a lot longer and is very screechy within its style, I can picture it being used within the build up of a jumps scare, it could also be used within the introduction of the trailer or within the outro/credits

Using Adobe Premier, I was able to exercise all the skills that I obtained from doing sound design, and i proceeded to making a sound animatic, in which (based on the animatic) I create a sound animatic, using custom sounds that where created earlier. Below you will be able to see the results of the sound for our animatic. This task was particularly difficult because the sounds did not go with the animatic as smoothly as I initially intended. In the future, we will probably try to record more sounds as it will grant us a much more wide variety of potential songs that can be used. Another reason why this task was difficult is because of the timing as it was fairly difficult.
Here are all the sounds that I have gathered for the SFX. It also comes with a sound pack which contain multiple horror sounds and FX such as thuds, drones, meta ETC.. The main files we look at was the music, drone, thud, SFX and wind folders. This was because our trailer is a horror one with the sub genre being supernatural.

This is an image from the Adobe Premier software. These are the tools within the software that was used, in order to create the sound animatic. The tool that I have highlighted is the selection tool which allowed me to grab/drag different sounds into & out of the animatic. The tool next to it is a clipper tool, this tool was used to chop things off of the files. The blade tool is used to slice a single clip into two seerate clips, once that is done you can click & drag one half of the clip then move and arrange as desired. The tool within the bottom left is the zoom if you use this to click on to the timeline to magnify the view, or drag and select a rectangular area to zoom into.

This section of the software is known as the timeline, and it is where the sounds are layered. Within this port I can aslo add effects such as transitions to different sounds, this could vary from a huge amunt of things, for example of things such as fading in & out. This time line can also also allow you to reduce the length & volume of audio clips.

Here is an actual screenshot within production. In this section you can clearly see that there is a lot of different layers within the sound section. Once I had gathered all of the sounds that we wanted to use I then looked through the animatic and tried to arrange the different cuts to fit the sounds. The program and software used in this stage was Premiere Pro CC 2015. and was used to spawn the animatic as it was edited in here. It was the most appropriate software to use in terms of lining up a variety of sounds with the different cut & stylistic features. This enabled a much easier animatic to edit. This was due to me having much more control over the animatic.
