This page includes all of the work completed over the transition period and the summer holidays. This work would help us develop our understanding of the horror genre which includes sub-genres, theories and semiotics. We individually made reviews about different horror films as well as completing treatments for our own films.
In the horror genre there are many iconic horror films from each sub-genre. These ideas were the basis for horror films since it allowed the audience to shape their expectations for future horror films.
The horror genre uses semiotics to represent common horror features which are seen in horror films.
There are 8 sub-genres within the horror genre. Each sub-genre focuses on different characteristics and ideas which are represented through iconic films in which distinguish them from other sub-genres.
There are many theories surrounding the horror genre which focus on different sections of the genre. There are theories that focus on the actual film making where as other theories focus on the audience and how they have changed over time.
During the transition period we each looked at 4 different horror trailers. We analysed the trailer to see the different camera, editing and sound techniques used. We also recorded the different locations seen in the trailer to see if there are any similarities among the other trailers.

We each made our own treatment: the title, tag-line, sub-genre, target audience, who the characters would be, synopsis and the inferred meaning of the film. We also stated the narrative in terms of Todorov's theory (equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution) to show how the film would progress.
We each made our own treatment in which we visually recorded our ideas for a film trailer. For this task we drew what would happen: where the characters would be, where the props would be, the camera angle, what would happen in the shot and how long it would last for.
We each watched 9 horror films which ranged in sub-genre and the time it was released. We identified the characters in each film (Burton's theory) as well as the equilibrium, disequilibrium and resolution (Todorov's theory). We also gave our own opinion on the film since we gave it a review.
James:
James made a trailer, poster, magazine and a marketing campaign for his summer work. He demonstrated brand continuity since his work follows a similar style, colour scheme and image, which are recognisable. In his horror trailer he used iMovie to add visual effects and sound which makes the trailer more effective and unique. Nevertheless, this work was time consuming and the original idea for his work was very hard to come up with.
Vanita:
Vanita made 4 posters and a book which included information on the sub-genres of horror for her summer work. Her posters demonstrate the skills that she has learnt in AS since they show a range of tools used. Additionally, the pictures used are of good quality and are presented in a way that reflects the horror genre. However, the posters follow a similar style and colour scheme since red is a common colour seen in horror. The book she made demonstrates an interest and a new way to present the work that she had done.
Emily:
Emily made a trailer, magazine, poster and a book that included different information about the horror genre for her summer work.
She found this task very interesting since her book demonstrated that she had developed her knowledge of the horror genre. Her poster and trailer showed that she has studied their layout since it's very eye-catching and seems professional. However, she was limited for props and location in her trailer but she has used what she has to make an effective trailer.
